CBM and chargeable weight
What is CBM?
CBM is cubic metres, the volume of your cargo: length times width times height in metres. A carton 1.2 m by 1.0 m by 0.9 m is 1.08 CBM.
What is chargeable weight?
Carriers charge on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, so light bulky cargo is not underpriced. This tool shows both and the one that governs.
How is volumetric weight calculated?
Each mode uses a volumetric divisor. Air freight uses 6000 cm3 per kg (about 167 kg per CBM), express courier 5000, road LTL 3000. Sea and rail LCL bill per revenue ton instead.
What is a revenue ton?
For sea and rail LCL, freight is billed per revenue ton, the greater of the cargo's cubic metres and its weight in tonnes (1 CBM versus 1000 kg).
Are these numbers exact?
They are planning estimates. Divisors and rounding vary by carrier and lane. Confirm with your forwarder before you price or book.
