IoT cold-chain monitoring: what is actually deployed, not what is promised
Cold-chain monitoring is the oldest sensing category in agri-food logistics, and on vendor pages now the most inflated: "real-time IoT visibility" and "blockchain traceability" appear in nearly every cold-chain pitch. The maturity behind those words varies enormously — a fleet-scale rollout with a public device count, a single named customer with one hard number, a joint press release for a trial still running, and a nine-year-old demonstration that keeps getting cited as if it measures something it never measured. Sorting those apart is the point of this piece, the second in a technology-theme pair alongside our AI-in-logistics maturity check.

- A newer claim — that live IoT telemetry makes delivery predictions 75% more accurate — comes only from a February 2026 WiseTech-Hapag-Lloyd joint announcement about a trial still in progress, with no independent benchmark behind it.
- The widely repeated "seven days to 2.2 seconds" blockchain traceability statistic is real but is Walmart's one-time 2016 demonstration, not a current metric, and it measures record-lookup speed, not cold-chain temperature control.
Deployed at fleet scale, with the numbers public: Hapag-Lloyd's reefer and container tracking
The clearest example of cold-chain IoT operating at real scale isn't a case study, it's a fleet-refit program with disclosed device counts. Hapag-Lloyd began outfitting its roughly 100,000-unit refrigerated container fleet with GPS and temperature-sensing devices in 2019 under the Hapag-Lloyd LIVE program, giving customers real-time location and in-transit temperature data for every reefer booking — a step up from the retrospective data-logger readouts that had long been standard industry practice. In April 2022 the carrier announced it would extend the same real-time tracking to its entire container fleet, dry boxes included, with installation beginning that summer and dry-container coverage completing over 2023-2024; by October 23, 2023 it had already installed its 700,000th tracking device toward a roughly 1.6-million-unit target — a milestone marked at a public ceremony in Hamburg with CEO Rolf Habben Jansen and Germany's federal minister for digital affairs and transport.
What that milestone measures is deployment scale, not outcome. Hapag-Lloyd has disclosed how many sensors are on how many containers and by when, corroborated independently across two trade-press outlets, but has not published a spoilage-reduction, claims-reduction or cargo-damage figure attributable to the rollout. In February 2026 the carrier partnered with logistics-software vendor WiseTech Global to pipe that live telemetry into WiseTech's CargoWise platform — an integration the two companies describe as a trial still being evaluated for accuracy and scale, not a finished product.
Named single-customer deployments, with real but narrow numbers
Cold-chain hardware maker Copeland (spun off from Emerson in 2023) publishes its own customer case studies rather than routing every claim through a marketing blog, which makes them a rare source of load-bearing detail in this category. Since 2016, Mexican avocado exporter La Bonanza has fitted a Copeland GO Real-Time tracker to a pallet on every truck leaving its Uruapan, Michoacán facility, using the device's temperature and location logs to hold shipments in the 38-42°F range its buyers require and, more urgently, to recover trucks after a wave of cargo theft targeting Mexico's "green gold" export trade — the same discipline our cold-chain record-keeping guide recommends logging at receival and dispatch. Copeland's own case study documents the theft-recovery use directly but discloses no percentage or dollar figure specific to La Bonanza; the result described is qualitative — faster location, faster recovery — not measured.
A sister case study from Chilean logistics advisor Saieg & Maggi, which manages an average 2,500 customer loads a year across sea freight, reefer trucks and air, does carry a hard number. Thieves fitted signal inhibitors to a truck carrying its client Pacific Nut's walnut and almond shipment, defeating the truck's own GPS — but the container-level Copeland tracker kept reporting anyway, letting authorities locate the load at a private residence in Santiago and recover the full $228,000 shipment, with six people detained; the case study does not date the theft. Saieg & Maggi's managing director separately estimated, in the same case study, that roughly 25% of its 2016 loads triggered a critical in-transit temperature alert that was corrected before spoilage, generating "hundreds of thousands of dollars" in customer savings — a company-reported, rounded estimate rather than an audited aggregate, but the most specific savings figure attributable to sensor-based monitoring we could locate.
Disclosed but unproven: a fresh vendor claim, and one we're not repeating
The most current claim in this space is also the least tested. WiseTech Global and Hapag-Lloyd's February 2026 announcement states that their joint "Live ETA" feature, built on the carrier's IoT telemetry, predicts arrival times 75% more accurately than static schedule-based predictions, for shipments Hapag-Lloyd manages door-to-door. That figure comes only from the companies' own joint press materials for an integration explicitly described as a trial, with no published benchmark methodology or third-party audit behind it — the same evidentiary tier as a vendor's own investor target rather than a realized result. A second, older claim that circulates just as widely — that Maersk's Captain Peter reefer-monitoring platform saves shippers "millions" in avoided cold-chain loss — traces only to third-party blogs; we could not locate a Maersk disclosure behind it and aren't publishing a number, the same call made on an unrelated Maersk AI claim in the companion piece to this one.
Blockchain-adjacent: a real, still-active network, built on a nine-year-old demonstration
"Blockchain cold chain" claims conflate two different technology layers: the sensors that actually measure temperature, humidity and shock, and a distributed ledger that timestamps and shares whatever records get fed into it. The ledger doesn't sense anything. IBM Food Trust, the best-known implementation, is a real, currently operating product, and it grew out of 2016-2018 pilots with Walmart on mango and pork traceability. But the statistic that keeps getting attached to it, that blockchain cut mango provenance lookup from seven days to 2.2 seconds, is Walmart food-safety executive Frank Yiannas's original internal demonstration from that pilot: a one-time exercise comparing a manual trace to a blockchain query, not an ongoing measured metric, and a claim about record-retrieval speed, not about cold-chain condition.
The regulatory push that would have forced broader, standardized digital traceability across high-risk produce, the FDA's FSMA Rule 204, was itself delayed 30 months in August 2025, moving its compliance date from January 2026 to July 20, 2028. That removes the near-term mandate that might otherwise have pulled sensor- and ledger-based tracking out of named pilots and into default practice across the sector.
