Take food and agricultural waste or surplus?

Get listed free. Send us your services, coverage and website, and we'll add you to the list.

This is an independent listing compiled from public information. Listings are not endorsements, and Fernable has no commercial affiliation with the providers listed.

Common questions

Can a waste and recycling provider take produce that failed food safety checks, not just cosmetic grading?

It depends on the failure. Cosmetically rejected but otherwise safe produce can go to stockfeed, composting, or food donation. Produce that failed on a genuine food safety basis, contamination, spoilage, or a pathogen finding, should not go to stockfeed or donation and normally needs to be handled as controlled waste rather than routed through this category at all. Confirm with the provider which failure types they are set up and permitted to accept.

Do I need a separate provider for packaging waste and organic waste?

Usually yes, or at least a separate stream within the same provider's contract. Organics collection, composting, digestion, rendering, and stockfeed all depend on a clean, uncontaminated organic input, so mixing packaging plastics or cardboard into that stream causes contamination penalties. Recycling for packaging material is typically quoted and collected separately, even when the same overall provider offers both services.

Does food donation cost anything, or does it generate revenue?

Arrangements vary and this page will not quote figures, but donation is generally not a revenue source: it is a diversion route for still-edible surplus, sometimes at no charge if the redistribution organisation collects, sometimes with a modest handling or transport cost to the exporter. Rendering and stockfeed are more likely to return value, since the output has a resale market that composting and donation do not.

How do I know if my volumes are big enough to justify anaerobic digestion over composting?

There is no fixed threshold, and this varies by region and by what plant capacity already exists nearby. As a practical filter, digestion tends to suit sites with a large, consistent year-round organic volume, since the plant economics depend on steady throughput. If your volume is seasonal or modest, composting or stockfeed routes are usually simpler to arrange and more widely available. Ask providers directly what minimum volume they need to take you on.

What happens if a provider's collection schedule cannot keep up during peak harvest?

Material backs up on site, which creates pest, odour, and food safety risks well before it becomes a contractual problem with the provider. This is a planning failure more than a provider failure: agree peak-season volumes and confirm surge capacity, including a fallback collection option, before the season starts rather than during it.

Is a waste transfer record the same as proof of recycling or composting?

No. A waste transfer or consignment record confirms what left your site and when. It does not by itself prove what the material became. If you need evidence for a buyer claim or certification audit, ask the provider separately for confirmation of the destination and processing method, and request it on a schedule that matches your own reporting cycle rather than trying to reconstruct it after the fact.

What this category covers

Waste and recycling providers take the material an exporter or packer can no longer sell as food and turn it into something else: compost, animal feed, biogas, recovered packaging material, or a donation to a food redistribution scheme. The service types Fernable lists here are composting, anaerobic digestion, rendering, stockfeed, food donation, recycling, and organics collection. Between them they cover almost everything that leaves a pack house or processing site as a by-product rather than a shipment.

What they do not do is move your export cargo or supply the materials that go around it. Packaging suppliers make the cartons, trays, and film your product ships in; this category deals with what happens after that packaging, or the produce inside it, is discarded or downgraded. Distributors move saleable product to buyers, not waste to disposal or reprocessing. If a provider is quoting on cartons or on outbound freight, you are talking to the wrong category.

Some providers span more than one service type, particularly organics collection paired with composting or anaerobic digestion, since the collection run and the processing site are often run by the same operator.

When you need one

The trigger is almost always a grading or quality decision made earlier in the chain. Produce that fails size, colour, or cosmetic grading at intake, trim and offcuts from processing, or stock that has passed its window for export but is still edible, all need a route out of the site that is not a bin destined for landfill. You engage a waste and recycling provider at the point that decision is made, not after material has already accumulated.

In practice this sits right after grading and packing, and often runs in parallel with it: a pack house with a rejection rate generates organic waste every shift it operates, so the collection or processing arrangement needs to be in place before the season starts, not sourced reactively once a cold store is full of material nobody wants to hold.

A second trigger is packaging and process waste rather than produce itself: pallet wrap, cardboard, crating, and site plastics that accumulate around export operations and need a recycling stream separate from the organics side. A third is a compliance or landfill-diversion target set by a buyer or retailer, which pushes an exporter to formalise arrangements that were previously informal, such as feeding offcuts to a local farmer.

Choosing the provider is a pre-season procurement decision, not an emergency call.

The service types, and which you need

Composting takes organic waste, mainly plant matter, and processes it aerobically into a soil amendment. It suits high-volume, low-contamination organic residues such as trim, peel, and unsellable produce, and is the default route where there is no local outlet for animal feed. Anaerobic digestion processes similar organic material without oxygen, producing biogas and a digestate by-product. It tends to fit larger, consistent volumes where the energy output justifies the plant, so it is more common near processing hubs than isolated farms.

Rendering converts animal by-products, offal, and inedible tissue into usable material such as tallow or meal, and is relevant only to meat, poultry, and seafood processors, not fresh produce packers. Stockfeed providers take edible-but-unsellable material, cosmetically rejected produce, or processing by-products and reprocess or redirect them into animal feed, which usually returns more value than composting for the same tonnage. Food donation routes still-edible surplus to redistribution organisations rather than any waste stream, and is the right choice whenever the reject reason is cosmetic rather than a food safety failure.

Recycling covers the non-organic side: cardboard, plastics, pallets, and packaging waste generated on site. Organics collection is the logistics layer underneath composting, digestion, and stockfeed: the scheduled uplift that gets material from your site to whichever processor handles it. Most exporters need organics collection paired with one processing route, plus recycling for packaging waste run separately.

How the work is quoted

Most quotes in this category are structured around collection frequency and volume rather than a flat fee. Expect pricing per tonne or per cubic metre of material, sometimes combined with a fixed charge for a scheduled collection run regardless of how full the bin or skip is on a given day. Anaerobic digestion and rendering contracts sometimes pay the exporter something for high-value by-product streams rather than charging for uplift, which reverses the usual direction of payment.

What drives the number is contamination and consistency. A clean, single-material stream of organic waste is cheaper to process than a mixed load containing packaging film, elastic bands, or non-organic contamination, because the provider has to sort it before processing or pay a penalty rate to their own downstream facility. Volume consistency also matters: a provider sizing a route around a seasonal peak will price differently than one collecting a steady year-round volume, and irregular or on-call collection generally costs more per tonne than a fixed schedule.

Distance from the processing site to yours is a real cost driver too, which is part of why local availability shapes price as much as service type.

Paperwork and records

The core document is a waste transfer or consignment record confirming what left your site, in what quantity, and on what date, which the provider typically issues and you retain. For rendering and stockfeed in particular, keep records of what material category was sent (which grading or quality issue caused the rejection) since a feed or rendering customer downstream may require that traceability, and a food safety auditor may ask for it during your own certification checks.

You are responsible for producing accurate waste characterisation at source: telling the provider whether material is organic, mixed, or contains packaging contamination, because misdeclaring it is the single most common cause of a rejected load or a requoted rate. The provider is responsible for producing evidence of lawful destination and disposal or reprocessing method, which you should keep on file, particularly if a buyer or certification body ever asks how your rejected volume was handled.

If you are claiming landfill diversion or a similar metric to a buyer, request volume and destination summaries from the provider on a schedule that matches your own reporting cycle rather than trying to reconstruct it later.

What goes wrong

The most common problem is contamination creeping into a stream that started clean. A composting or stockfeed arrangement is agreed on the basis of pure organic waste, and over a season, packaging offcuts, gloves, or elastic bands start ending up in the same bin because staff on the floor were never told the material had a value-bearing destination rather than a bin. The fix is simple and unglamorous: clear signage and a short induction for anyone handling the reject line, plus spot checks by whoever manages the contract.

A second failure is capacity mismatch at peak season. A collection schedule sized for average volume falls over during a harvest or processing peak, and material backs up on site, which creates its own food safety and pest problems before it ever reaches the provider. Agree peak-season volumes and surge capacity before the season starts, not once bins are overflowing.

A third is treating the arrangement as informal because it involves waste rather than saleable product, so there is no written agreement, no fallback provider, and no reporting. When the informal arrangement falls over, usually when the person who ran it moves on, there is nothing to hand to a replacement. Put it in writing even when the volumes are small.

What to check before choosing

Compare providers on what they actually do with the material, not just what they collect. Ask where the composting, digestion, rendering, or feed processing site physically is, since a provider that only collects and subcontracts processing adds a margin and a point of failure you cannot see. A provider that owns or has a direct relationship with the end processing site can usually price more consistently and explain contamination rejections more precisely.

For rendering and stockfeed specifically, check whether the provider or their downstream customer holds relevant feed or animal by-product handling standards for your market. HACCP-based process control is a reasonable baseline to expect from any provider handling material that re-enters an animal feed or food chain, and GlobalGAP-certified growers will sometimes require their waste and by-product handlers to meet a comparable standard as part of their own audit trail. For food donation, check the provider has a working relationship with a recognised redistribution organisation rather than an informal arrangement, since your own liability protection around donated food often depends on that chain being documented.

Ask for references from other exporters or packers of a similar size and product type, since a provider well suited to a small pack house's organic waste may not have the collection capacity for a large processing site's peak volumes, and the reverse is also true.

Where to look next

Coverage in this category is strongest close to major processing and packing hubs, because composting, digestion, and rendering all depend on economies of scale and short haul distances to be viable. A processor in an established growing or packing region will generally find more provider choice, and more competitive pricing, than one operating somewhere more remote, where organic waste more often ends up going to a single local outlet by default rather than by comparison.

If you are exporting through a hub with an active packaging or processing cluster, it is worth checking packaging suppliers alongside this category, since the two often need coordinating: what goes into your cartons and film affects what comes out as recyclable waste. Distributors is the category to check if the material in question is still saleable rather than a genuine reject, since routing borderline stock to a secondary buyer is usually worth more than sending it to any of the service types listed here.
